FARGO (KFGO) – Fargo Police determined there was no active threat after searching the area around several south Fargo schools following a report of an armed man Wednesday afternoon, while school district officials apologized for an accidental district-wide emergency alert sent during the response
Officers were dispatched at approximately 1:34 p.m. to the 1100 block of 22nd Street South following a report of a man carrying a gun. Due to the location’s proximity to local campuses, six district facilities were placed into a precautionary “secure the building” status.
The impacted facilities included South High School, Carl Ben Eielson Middle School, Explorer Academy, Agassiz, and Jefferson and Lewis and Clark elementary schools. Classroom instruction continued inside the buildings while police investigated.
Officers searched the area but were unable to locate anyone matching the description. Police reported no evidence of a crime, and the scene was cleared shortly after.
However, shortly after 2 p.m., a mass emergency notification was distributed through the Infinite Campus system to all families and staff across the entire district.
In a message to district families, Superintendent Cory Steiner apologized for the widespread false alarm, explaining that an error with the district’s new messaging software caused the alert to go to all families rather than just those at the affected schools.
Steiner confirmed that all students and staff remained safe throughout the incident and that all impacted facilities quickly returned to normal operations.
