MOORHEAD (KFGO/KVRR) — White Earth Nation made a presentation to Moorhead City Council about its plans for a plot of land the tribe purchased just east of the city.
Initial plans include a full-scale casino, luxury resort with 200 rooms, dining, convention center, parking garage and a convenience store. The tribe expects to create up to 500 jobs.
White Earth Nation is looking for a Letter of Support from the cities of Moorhead and Dilworth and Clay County before they seek approval from the federal government to put the land into a trust.
“We’re looking at, looking for a Letter of Support to put land into trust for gaming, but that doesn’t only mean gaming, that means hotel, convention center (and) a lot more economic opportunity,” said White Earth Secretary-Treasure Michael LaRoque.
The tribe says that process itself can take 18 to 24 months, and environmental reviews could push construction back for years.
White Earth Nation bought a section of land in Clay County in the northwest corner of the intersection of I-94 and State Highway 336. According to the county, the 280 acre lot was purchased last December through a land auction for $3.9 million.
Last week, the tribe presented its plans to Clay County Commissioners.
