Tomorrow (Saturday, April 20, 2019) marks 20 years since the school shooting at Colorado’s Columbine
High School. 12 students and a teacher were killed in the attack, and 23 others were
injured.
In this podcast: KFGO Newsman Jim Monk was working at KFGO 20 years ago. The morning after the Columbine massacre, he flew to Colorado to cover the horrific story. He shares some of the memories of covering the story during It Takes 2.
At that time, “a school shooting was virtually unheard of…everybody was talking about it.” Monk says, “… it was one of the craziest days of my professional career.” He also notes that he thought he was covering a story that he would “never ever see again in his life”. (Of course, we know the unfortunate reality now.)
One of the stories that still sticks out with Jim today is an interview he did with Jill Stevenson. She was 16 years old, from Watertown, South Dakota and had family ties to North Dakota, her close friend Cassie died in Columbine. She was shot in the head.
A captivating conversation. Listen to the full podcast above.
