Today, North Dakota Stockmen’s Association President Randy Schmitt, a Rugby, N.D., cow-calf producer, issued the following statement about Beef Month:
“As May arrives and we celebrate Beef Month, it’s a fitting time to reflect on the role beef plays on our plates, in our communities and across North Dakota’s landscape.
“Beef is more than a centerpiece at the dinner table — it’s a powerhouse of nutrition. It provides high-quality protein and other essential nutrients that support energy, muscle development and overall health. For families like mine who raise cattle, it is a natural choice we’re proud to stand behind.
“The cattle industry is a cornerstone of North Dakota’s economy. It generates approximately $1.5 billion in annual cash receipts, making it one of our state’s economic pillars. When you consider the ripple effect through local businesses, feed suppliers, veterinarians, equipment dealers and more, that impact multiplies several times over — supporting jobs and strengthening rural communities across the state.
“Equally important is the role cattle producers play in caring for the environment. Ranching families like ours are deeply committed to stewardship, preserving open spaces, protecting natural resources and maintaining healthy grasslands for future generations. These working landscapes not only support livestock but also provide habitat for wildlife and contribute to the environmental health of our state.
“As a cow-calf producer near Rugby, I’m grateful to ranch alongside my family and be part of an industry that feeds people, fuels our economy and sustains our land. This Beef Month, I encourage everyone to celebrate the many contributions of beef — and the people behind it.”
