FARGO (KFGO) – The parking lot was overflowing and patrons waited 30 minutes for a table just before noon Friday at the restaurant where a mother and her baby were shot earlier this week.
Many were loyal customers, others were there for the first time, but the show of support was strong for Plaza Azteca’s reopening.
“The whole town is going to wrap their arms around this woman and child, like they should,” one customer said. “I have never eaten here. I just think that this is a way the community can help these people heal.”
Plaza Azteca committed 50% of today’s sales to help the shooting victims – a 21-year-old Moorhead woman and her seven-month-old baby. The woman and child were hospitalized after the violent incident at the restaurant Wednesday afternoon.
A group of NDSU students who were waiting for a table expressed disbelief that such a thing could happen here.
“We heard about what happened on the news,” another customer said. “It’s crazy it happened in Fargo…just blows my mind.”
Some folks ordered takeout anticipating the crowds. Two women from the Scheels corporate office were bringing lunch back to their coworkers.
“We just wanted to show support for that young woman that, unfortunately, has a lot of hospital bills to pay and her sweet baby,” one of the SCHEELS employees said. “We just wanted to do what we could and get some lunch because we know this place might inevitably suffer just a little bit. We wanted to show them our support as well.”
The manager on duty said he was calling in extra staff to help with the outpouring of support.
