2019 is proving to be an extremely wet harvest season. Farmers are looking for some dry and warm weather to be able to get safely in and out of fields to bring in food items such as sugar beets.
Sheriff Mark Empting of Clay County, MN takes a few minutes to speak with It Takes Two about the potential for road hazards as the beet harvest gets into full swing.
Some easy tips will keep you safe while traveling near farm land or processing centers.
1. Mud is like ice. Stopping on mud takes time. You may not have full control of your vehicle. Exercising caution in stopping, starting and on turns will greatly improve your road safety.
2. Large vehicles hauling heavy loads need extra time to stop or correct. Staying back at least 1,000 feet from trucks hauling sugar beets should give you adequate time to react if there is trouble. Sharing the roadway is imperative.
3. If a truck should lose part of its load and it causes damage to your vehicle, alert law enforcement immediately. Just like any accident, you should report the incident.
