Overall, the ice fishing season is over and few fishing reports are available. Anglers eager to fish the open water are now gravitating to streams and rivers, as well as some lakes in Minnesota that are ice-free — find open waters at the DNR’s 2022 Lake Ice Out Dates map.

Minnesota fishing opener dates for the 2022-2023 fishing season for most inland waters are as follows: Stream trout: April 16; walleye, sauger, northern pike, bass (catch-and-release) and lake trout: May 14; muskie: June 4. The fishing season for crappies, sunnies, perch and catfish is continuous. The walleye and sauger season for Minnesota waters that border Canada remains open until April 14.
According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, anglers need to be very cautious due to extremely cold water this time of year.

Northwest Region
Ice fishing has ended on Lake of the Woods. The Rainy River, however, has open water all the way to the Wheeler’s Point and boats are being launched at some of the accesses. Anglers fishing these areas report a strong walleye and sturgeon bite.

The trout harvest opener is Saturday, April 16 so area streams may be very busy. Ice out was declared April 10 for Big Stone Lake, and anglers are heading out to fish the open water.
