Dew point vs. Relative Humidity
KFGO Meteorologist Tom Szymanski says a general rule of thumb is if the dew point is over 65, it’s starting to feel humid. Once it’s above 70, we are talking really humid. And, the dew point reading we had earlier this week of 77 is tropical!
The dew point is a reading in Fahrenheit and is the temperature at which there would be dew on the grass.
Let’s break it down…
Warm air can hold more moisture than cool air.
So, if you picture the warm air as a 5 gallon bucket and the cool air as a pop bottle…
And if you fill the pop bottle completely, you would have 100% relative humidity. If you fill up the 5 gallon bucket to 30%, your relative humidity reading would be much lower, however, the amount of water (or moisture) is much higher.
Hence why the relative humidity reading can be confusing.
