Carey Fry with Job Service of North Dakota joins IT2 with a look at the local job market as we inch closer to Fall 2019.
The Good News:
Carey tells us that the unemployment rate in the FM area is extremely low. You actually have to work, no pun intended, to not have a job right now. All job types (full time or part-time) and job sectors are seeking help. Especially those in the medical field.
This means that companies are having to get competitive with their offerings. Carey notes that it is more uncommon than common to find job listings that only pay the minimum wage. Some are much higher than the federal pay floor for hourly employees. This gives an edge to those who are looking to make more than just enough to survive. individuals with skills in trade professions or previous experience can expect to find a job market that will be very happy to meet and interview you.
You can even interview THEM by going to one of more than a dozen Job Fairs that are being hosted in the area.
The Bad News:
The workplace is competitive. It’s a double edge sword for companies looking to hire new employees, but retain their current staff. Imagine starting 5 years ago at $10 an hour and now making $20 – but a new hire off of the street is getting $18 on day one. The wage issue can be extremely frustrating for employees and employers.
Whether you are a college student coming into the FM area for the first time ever or someone looking for a new job/second job/retired – but bored…you have a multitude of options available.
