Fentanyl seized during traffic stop near Albert Lea, MN on Feb. 20, 2026.
ALBERT LEA, Minn. (KFGO) – What started as a traffic stop in southern Minnesota turned into a major drug bust.
The Minnesota State Patrol says a trooper stopped a vehicle on Feb. 20 on Interstate-90 near Albert Lea, southwest of Rochester.
The vehicle was being stopped for speeding and the trooper also noticed signs of possible drug activity.
With help from a K9 partner and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, authorities found nine packages containing approximately 50,000 fentanyl pills.
The State Patrol said this single traffic stop prevented tens of thousands of dangerous pills from reaching Minnesota communities saying, “Large-scale seizures like this disrupt the supply of fentanyl — a drug linked to hundreds of overdose deaths in Minnesota each year — and help keep our communities safer.”
In 2024, Minnesota saw 678 opioid-involved drug overdose deaths, according to the latest data from the Department of Health.
