HANKINSON, N.D. (KFGO) – The Catholic Diocese of Fargo says while damage was extensive, St. Phillips Catholic Church in Hankinson can likely be saved.
A fire, that appears to have started in the attic of the historic church, did heavy damage. There was also smoke and water damage throughout the church.
Diocese spokesman Paul Braun says two members of the congregation entered the building shortly after the blaze was reported late Monday afternoon and removed the Blessed Sacrament and other sacred articles and vestments before they were told to leave the church over concerns about their safety.
Bishop John Folda has toured the damaged portions of the church.
A remodeling project was underway when the fire broke out. A damage estimate has not been determined. The cause of the blaze is under investigation by the North Dakota State Fire Marshal’s Office.
