The University of Minnesota Extension has launched its new self- paced online course, Introduction to Solar Grazing, designed to help farmers and agricultural landowners explore the integration of livestock grazing with solar energy production.
As dual-use land management gains traction across the agricultural sector, solar grazing offers producers an innovative avenue to diversify farm revenue while maintaining active agricultural land use. This introductory course outlines the core principles of solar grazing, highlighting key contrasts between grazing within solar facilities and traditional home pastures.
Course topics include:
- Foundational principles: An introduction to solar grazing practices and industry
standards. - Site overview & safety: Understanding solar energy infrastructure, operational personnel,
and site safety protocols. - Vegetation management: Practical approaches to managing forage and plant health under
and around solar panels.
Solar grazing provides a unique opportunity to marry renewable energy goals with sustainable livestock management. This course is built to give producers the foundational knowledge they need to evaluate whether solar grazing fits their operations.
The course officially opens on November 1st with open, continuous enrollment, allowing participants to complete the material at their own pace from anywhere.
