The Fertilizer Institute is backing new bipartisan legislation it says could help expand domestic fertilizer production and strengthen supplies for American farmers. The Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act of 2026 would reform federal permitting laws and regulations, potentially reducing delays for new and expanded fertilizer facilities.
TFI President and CEO Corey Rosenbusch says current permitting processes can involve years of delays, and significant costs and uncertainty that discourage investment. He says clearer timelines, better coordination among federal agencies, and improved access to natural gas pipelines could help manufacturers invest in additional production capacity.
Fertilizer producers sometimes face permitting delays lasting decades and costing tens of millions of dollars, according to TFI. The organization says those obstacles can limit fertilizer supplies, affect farmers’ production costs, and ultimately influence food prices.
TFI is urging the Senate to advance the legislation in November, following industry letters sent to lawmakers earlier this month.
