BISMARCK, N.D. (KFGO) – North Dakota Attorney General Drew Wrigley says the Legislature needs to address laws on drivers fleeing from police.
Sentences on those convictions can be served at the same time as other crimes.
Wrigley says he hasn’t seen Dem-NPL State Senator Jamie Selzler of Fargo’s plan to make it mandatory for people convicted of fleeing serving that sentence separately from other crimes, but supports the overall idea.
“You don’t get to cheapen the phrase back the blue. Help them protect our communities,” Wrigley said.
A similar bill failed in past sessions.
“If you don’t think that people conduct themselves rationally in the face of law enforcement, and what the enforcement mechanisms are, then let’s surrender the whole thing,” Wrigley said.
Twenty-four-year-old Elijah Baumann of Moorhead died last week after troopers say he crashed into a motorcycle on University Drive in Fargo after fleeing at 120 miles per hour while drunk.
The motorcycle driver, 19-year-old Isaac Putney lost his left leg below the knee and shattered his arm according to a GoFundMe fundraiser.
Last month, 49-year-old music teacher Ian Frye of Christine was killed in a crash on Highway 81 south of Fargo.
Deputies say 19-year-old Cornelio Vasquez IV of Grand Forks was fleeing at 109 miles per hour. He faces homicide while fleeing law enforcement, manslaughter, reckless endangerment and reckless driving charges.
