WASHINGTON (KFGO) – North Dakota Congresswoman Julie Fedorchak’s bill to modernize the country’s electricity transmission system unanimously passes the house.
The High Capacity Grid Act requires the use of best-available conductors for new and rebuilt interstate transmission lines. It also aims to improve grid reliability at the lowest possible costs for consumers.
“Permitting and constructing new transmission lines can take years. On average, it takes more than four years to permit a new power line and sometimes over a decade before a single shovel hits the ground,” Fedorchak said.
Information from the Brattle Group and Energy Information Administration shows electricity transmission costs gone up 180% since 2005 and generation costs have declined.
