FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – The fervor over Flock cameras continues to grow, as more and more communities across the nation are fighting to get Flock out.
“No matter where you go – if you leave the house, go to work, drop the kids off at school or daycare – these cameras are following you,” a protest organizer told us.
In Fargo, two local car clubs are joining forces to protest against the license plate readers. We spoke with one of the protest organizers who wished to remain anonymous due to privacy concerns.
The demonstration is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Saturday at the corner of 13th Ave. South & 45th St.
“Midnight Mafia had actually put a post out asking who would all be interested in doing a Flock meet protest, and I think there were over 300 people who said yeah we should do it, so we just did it,” they said.
They started talking about Flock cameras recently, especially as concerns over data privacy have grown around the nation.
“The fact that it’s owned by a multi-billion dollar private company owned by some of the most wealthy and powerful people in the country. Really it kind of boils down to our privacy at the end of the day.”
And they say it doesn’t just affect people in the car community.
“These cameras are everywhere. Pointed at places where families and children gather, schools, parks, all sorts of things,” they said.
They want people to be aware of how these cameras are collecting data, and just who has access to it.
“We’ve already seen multiple cases of people using these cameras for personal reasons in law enforcement,” they said.
And they hope that local leaders will be in attendance to hear their concerns, and push for greater transparency.
“We’d love it if the mayors of Fargo, Moorhead, West Fargo would come out to the protest on Saturday.”
“We just want more transparency with these cameras. If we’re going to make them a regular thing in our communities, we’ve got to know a little bit more about them and be able to protect ourselves.”
