ELY, Minn. (KFGO) – The U.S. Forest Service says closures in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness have been extended to October 1st as wildfires continue to burn across the northeastern portion of Minnesota.
More than 70,000 acres have burned in and around the boundary waters across the U.S. And Canada. Nearly 1,000 firefighters are working to put out the fires.
The forest service says the entirety of the Boundary Waters have been evacuated so forest staff can focus on firefighting efforts. They say the nearly 1,000,000 acre Boundary Waters is too large for staff to safely locate and escort visitors if a fire quickly spreads.
