Wallace Donavon Nord, born on March 13, 1931, in rural Wolverton to Albin and Anna (Loff) Nord, lived a life deeply rooted in farming and community service. Raised on the family farm, Wally faced early responsibilities when, at just 14 years old, he took on managing the farm during his father’s illness, all while diligently completing his high school education.
On January 17, 1953, Wally was united in marriage to Beverly Rae Fankhanel at St. James Church in Barnesville. Together, they shared a remarkable 73 years of marriage, making their home on the family farm that remained central to their lives.
Wally’s dedication to the Nord Family Farm extended beyond his own fields as he became a respected leader within the farming community. His faith was a guiding force, reflected in his numerous contributions to his church, including serving as church president, participating in the building committee, and dedicating countless hours to church projects.
His commitment to community service was far-reaching. Wally was actively involved with the PTA, Crop Improvement Association, Concordia College C-400 Board, Farm Credit Board, National Association Farm Credit Banks, Breckenridge Bremer Bank Board, Wilkin County Soil and Water Conservation Board, and the Wilkin County Republican Party. He took pride in being a founding member and executive board member of the Red River Valley Sugarbeet Growers Association during the purchase of American Crystal Sugar.
In recognition of his many contributions and achievements, Wally received numerous honors, such as King Agassiz of Wilkin County, the Valley Farmer Homemaker Award, Farmer of the Year from the Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce, Outstanding Farm Family of the Year from the University of Minnesota, and the Soil and Water Conservation Farm of the Year award.
Wally enjoyed flying, golfing, spending time at the Crystal Lake cabin, and being with his grandkids and great‑grandkids. He never missed a chance to teach a lesson or offer a memorable remark.
Wallace Donavon Nord’s life stands as a testament to dedication, faith, and community spirit. His legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him and those who benefit from his lifelong commitment to agriculture and service.
