Greg “Cliffy” Krause, 49, of Wyndmere, passed away unexpectedly from cardiac arrest on June 16, 2026. His untimely loss has shattered his community, friends and family, especially his wife, Sara, and their daughter, Addie, (his ‘Little Peanut.”)
Greg was born on September 7, 1976, to Charles and Penny Krause in Breckenridge, Minnesota. He graduated from Hankinson High School in 1995. Greg and Sara Schmit married on January 2, 2009, and were blessed with Addison Lynn on October 7, 2010.
Greg found peace and purpose outside. Whether it was hunting, fishing, or work, he simply wanted to spend time on the land. He enjoyed farming with Cliff and Luke, who meant far more to Greg than the words “uncle” and “cousin” could ever describe. Greg also earned a degree in Agricultural Systems Management from NDSU. His first position as an agronomist was at CHS. It was a difficult decision for him to move on in 2011 and leave those close friends. Greg was proud of his fifteen-year career at MinnDak where he could pull up to a field on his four-wheeler and check the crops. To him it was more than just a job; the friendships he formed with his coworkers and the relationships with his clients meant the world to him.
Greg will be remembered not only for his love of the outdoors, but also for his willingness to serve others. A true friend and trusted neighbor, Greg generously gave to his community. As Commander of the Sons of the American Legion since 2012, he made countless meals for community events alongside lifelong friends. Service was not something Greg did for recognition; it was simply who he was.
Greg’s life centered around his family. He loved spending time at the lake, and going to Addie’s games and concerts. It didn’t have to be much because family was everything. His nieces and nephews will remember his teddy bear hugs, his annual Thanksgiving turkey gobble impression, and of course, his expert sausage-making skills.
Greg was a big guy with an even bigger heart. He is survived by his wife Sara (Schmit) and daughter Addie, parents Charles and Penny Krause, siblings Katie and Tony Johnson; Jess and Daryl Schroeder; Jennie and Trevor Krause; in-laws Jan and Nick III Schmit, Christina and Sean Morris, Nicholas Schmit IV and Jonathan Capehart, and David Schmit; nieces and nephews Hannah Short, Alex, Grant, Quinn, and Ella Johnson; Emelia, Jocelyn, Annabel, and Caroline Schroeder; Mackenzie, Olivia, Evelyn, Henry, and Emma Krause; and Maria, Michael, Lydia, and Daniel Morris
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Gertie and Clifford Sr. Krause; Phyllis and Bud Engen; and an infant brother.
Though his life was far too short, Greg leaves behind a legacy of generosity, friendship, hard work, and selfless love, including the donation of his corneas to the Lion’s Gift of Sight. His memory will live on in every shared meal, every helping hand, and every sunrise over the fields he loved so much.
