As Minnesota sports fans we have endured a lot of emotional pain over the past 35 years. Since the Twins won the World Series in 1991 there have been various “we woulda, coulda, shoulda” moments we have had to endure.
Many of those moments don’t even have to do anything to do with anything on the field, court or ice. Many of the heartbreaking issues came with personnel decisions from the front office of each team. Decisions that unfortunately helped other teams win titles.
The Vikings are guilty of not drafting Warren Sapp. Imagine having him next to John Randle. It might have put them over the top in 1998. Add that with trading away Brad Johnson, eventually leading those two winning a Super Bowl together in 2000. Most recently “the Purple” decided to let Sam Darnold go and the Seahawks signed him and won a Super Bowl.
The Twins gave up on David Ortiz and he went on to become a Boston legend helping the Red Sox win multiple World Series. The Wild let Matt Cullen go and he went to Pittsburgh to win two Stanley Cups and Minnesota has been looking for a center who can win face-offs to compliment Joel Erickson Ek ever since.
The Timberwolves traded Kevin Garnett to Boston and he won a title with the Celtics. Karl Anthony Towns might be on his way to win a championship with New York after Minnesota traded him to the Knicks two years ago.
It’s bad enough we have endured heartbreak in the games that were lost, especially in the postseason; but the added salt in the wound is seeing former Minnesota players have glory somewhere else.
