Over the last couple of days, we have discussed data centers extensively. Word reached me that farmers were having a hard time dealing with the road conditions around Applied Digital in Ellendale. They sent me photos and made calls. All from people in the area that are affected. None of it looked good, and worst of all, none of it look fair.
The conversation really was about control. They are concerned about controlling their infrastructure. Control of what the future holds and, most importantly, control of their lives as they knew them.
These data centers remind me of life in the Bakken during the boom. When fracking hit western North Dakota, the area exploded and well rigs went up everywhere. Men came from all over the country and all the living spaces were occupied. Hotels, restaurants, and bars were full to capacity. The cost of everything went up, and for the most part, the quality of life went down.
That storm subsided. The drilling caught up to the need, and for the most part, to the potential. It won’t do that with data centers.
Everything we talked about won’t help Ellendale. The only thing that will help them is the money they get for it. Money that they not only deserve, but also need. So the big question is, what can be done?
I have a couple of ideas: Politicians can’t be allowed to let this happen using nondisclosure agreements. Counties, cities and townships can’t go forward without proper zoning in place. Any politician who isn’t upfront about any personal gain is subject to investigation by the ethics commission and removal from office. Most importantly, the State of North Dakota needs to provide guidance. We owe these people that. After all, just like the Bakken, we’ll be the ones who profit the most.
Good riding with you,
Joel
