FINGAL, N.D. (KFGO) – A power line in rural Cass County snapped after being hit by a hot air balloon.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office got a call from Cass County Electric Cooperative around 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 4. A deputy was dispatched to the area about four miles west of Alice and seven miles east of Fingal, ND.
The operator of the hot air balloon is part of a group conducting practice runs, and their eventual intent is to set a new world record for travel in a homemade airship.
During takeoff around 8:30 a.m., wind began pushing the balloon before the pilot could get enough air into the balloon to gain altitude.
With assistance from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), additional information is still being gathered.
Cass County Electric says it has completed approximately $1,000 in repairs to the power distribution line.
No one was hurt.
