HERMANTOWN, Minn. (KFGO) – Fire officials in northeastern Minnesota are investigating a townhome explosion that left two people dead.
Crews were called around 6:20 Saturday night after reports of a significant explosion in Hermantown.
Investigators said six units exploded, and the roof was blown off. People in the area reported hearing the explosion as far as 12 miles away.
Firefighters on scene searched for two missing residents. One was located at 10 p.m. Saturday and the other was found around 4:30 Sunday morning.
The two people who died were identified as 89-year-old Gayle Nelson and 88-year-old Joan Wisneski.
The Red Cross and the St. Louis County Public Health Department is helping eight people who are displaced.
The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
