FARGO (KFGO) – Tony Gehrig is hoping to reclaim his seat on the Fargo City Commission. Gehrig served on the commission from 2015 to 2022.
In the announcement on Feb. 2, Gehrig called himself a “fiscal hawk” during his time on the commission who regularly voted ‘no’ on things like economic incentives and special assessments.
He says his focus is on how to best serve the taxpayers of Fargo and protect their hard-earned tax dollars.
“Platitudes will not fix the numerous and very serious problems facing our city. We need leaders who will speak specifically and plainly about the issues we have and the solutions they plan to implement,” Gehrig said.

Tony Gehrig announces run for Fargo City Commission
If elected to the Fargo City Commission, Gehrig outlined six issues he would like to focus on: Balancing the budget, reducing debt, ending incentives, ending special assessments, focusing on the needs of Fargo while rejecting the wants, and defining the role of city government.
“Fargo has been deficit spending for many years resulting in an indefensible financial situation,” Gehrig said.
He claims the city budget has risen by 5% to 11% every year for the past decade, which is unsustainable.
Gehrig says irresponsible spending has left the City of Fargo with $1.3 billion in debt, much of which comes from special assessments.
Business owner and artist Anna Johnson has also announced her bid for the Fargo City Commission. Johnson unsuccessfully ran for the Fargo City Commission in 2022 and 2024.
The commission seats of Denise Kolpack and Dave Piepkorn are up in June 2026. Piepkorn cannot run again due to term limits. Kolpack announced that she is running for the mayoral seat as Mayor Tim Mahoney ends his final term in office.
Democratic State Sen. Josh Boschee and National Guard Soldier Jake Coulter are also running to be the Mayor of Fargo.
