DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (KFGO) – A correctional officer at the Lake Region Law Enforcement Center in Devils Lake died by suicide Saturday at a local motel.
Officials in Ramsey County say Justin Smith, 38, started working at the law enforcement center in 2017.
Starr Klemetsrud, Director of the Lake Region Law Enforcement Center, said Smith was a dependable team member and respected colleague.

Smith received a life-saving award in 2023 for his quick action, courage and commitment to others.
“Officer Smith’s service and dedication to this profession made a meaningful difference in our facility and in the lives of fellow staff. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and coworkers during this incredibly difficult time,” Klemetsrud said.
Support resources and peer services are being made available to staff at the law enforcement center.
