BELFIELD, N.D. (KFGO) – Highway 85 in western North Dakota was shut down on Wednesday as law enforcement and other agencies responded to a deadly crash.
The North Dakota Highway Patrol says an 88-year-old man in a pickup was driving south on U.S. Highway 85 around 2:30 p.m.
A semi with an oversized load consisting of a puller truck, pusher truck and pilot vehicle was driving north. Troopers say the trucks tried to move as far right as possible, but the pickup was unable to maneuver past them.
The pickup hit a beam on the trailer and then crashed into the rear axles of the trailer.
The pickup driver lost control and hit the pilot vehicle, sending both vehicles into the ditch about 18 miles south of Belfield in Stark County.
The driver of the pickup died from injuries sustained in the crash.
The crash remains under investigation by the North Dakota Highway Patrol. Highway 85 has since reopened.
Responding agencies include the North Dakota Highway Patrol, Stark County Sheriff’s Office, Slope County Sheriff’s Office, Hettinger County Sheriff’s Office, Billings County EMS, and Billings County Rural Fire.
