ST. PAUL, Minn. (KFGO Learfield) – Five upper Midwest energy providers are proposing a major transmission upgrade along Interstate 94, adding a second circuit to the existing power line between Fargo and Alexandria.
The companies say the expansion is needed to meet growing demand, improve grid reliability, and access lower-cost power across the region.
The circuit would be built entirely within the current right-of-way and could include up to 100 new structures, minimizing affects to nearby landowners.
The line was originally constructed as part of the CapX2020 project, completed in 2015. The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission will review the request for a certificate of need, a process expected to take about a year. If approved, construction could start in 2028 with the upgraded line in service by 2032.
Project partners include Great River Energy, Minnesota Power, Missouri River Energy Services, Otter Tail Power Company and Xcel Energy. The companies say the expansion will help support economic growth and strengthen the electric grid during extreme weather.
