JAMESTOWN, N.D. (KFGO) — Newly-filed court records say a Jamestown elementary teacher and volunteer firefighter sexually assaulted a teenage girl he had known since she was in 4th grade.
A police report says the victim, who is now an adult, went to police December 5. The victim told police she first met 41-year-old Michael Romans when she was a student at Gussner Elementary, where Romans worked. The victim said she babysat for Romans and was tutored by him.
The victim said over time, their relationship became sexual, starting with hugging and kissing. The victim told police she didn’t remember exactly when Romans first sexually assaulted her, but knew it was shortly after she got her driver’s license when she was 16. The abuse continued until the victim was 18. The victim told police the abuse occasionally occurred when Romans’ wife was in the home.
When interviewed by police, Romans admitted he knew the victim was underage. He told police he is battling a sex addiction, and has received counseling for years.
Romans is charged with felony corruption of a minor. He faces up to 5 years in prison if convicted.
