FERGUS FALLS, Minn. (KFGO/KBRF) – Two men have been charged in a check forging scheme in Otter Tail County. Keith King of St. Cloud, 62, and Daryl Jungroth of Elk River, 51, were arrested on Tuesday for attempting to cash fraudulent checks at banks in Fergus Falls and Pelican Rapids.
Court documents say both men told law enforcement they received the checks from their employer, but did not know his last name or the name of the company.
King told Pelican Rapids police that he, the employer and another worker, believed by police to be Jungroth, rode together from St. Cloud. Jungroth told Fergus Falls police that he and his roommate at a homeless shelter in St. Cloud came to the area to work on a lake cabin.
King said that the employer dropped the other man in Fergus Falls to cash his check, then dropped King off at the bank in Pelican Rapids and was gone when he came out.
King and Jungroth told police they were supposed to be paid a few hundred dollars, but learned at the banks the checks they were given were for $3,245.20 and $2,775.80. The bank employee in Pelican Rapids told police the check was refused because the signature was photocopied and the check had been altered.
King and Jungroth have been charged with offering a forged check, a felony offense. Court documents do not say if the alleged employer has been identified.
