Minnesota wheat farmers need a voice at the legislative table. The Minnesota Association of Wheat Growers is that voice.
But without farmer leaders guiding the organization, MAWG’s voice wouldn’t resonate with legislators in St. Paul and Washington, D.C. – they’re the backbone of MAWG’s mission. This year, there’s one seat on the MAWG board of directors up for election: an at-large position currently held by Treasurer Tate Petry.
“As a MAWG board member, instead of sitting around having coffee and complaining about it, we can talk directly to somebody that might be able to do something about it,” MAWG President Kevin Leiser said. “We need strong advocates on our board to represent Minnesota’s wheat growers.”
Elected by fellow farmers, the at-large position will be voted on Dec. 10 at MAWG’s Annual Meeting during the Prairie Grains Conference. While Petry will be seeking reelection, other growers are also welcome to run for the board seat. If you or someone you know is interested in running for the seat, please fill out a nomination form by Dec. 10. For more details, contact MAWG Executive Director Brian Sorenson at (218) 253-4311 ext. 1 or bsorenson@mnwheat.com.
“Farmers can really advocate for what we need in a way that industry doesn’t have the same ability,” Petry said. “When farmers go to St. Paul and Washington, D.C., legislators really seem to stop, listen and try to understand the things that we’re saying. We’re the boots on the ground.”
