(KNFL/KFGO) – In a move that blends familiarity with fresh opportunity, the Minnesota Twins announced Wednesday that they have hired Derek Shelton as their next manager — marking a homecoming for the baseball mind who once helped shape the team’s offensive identity.
Shelton, 55, returns to Target Field after spending the past five seasons managing the Pittsburgh Pirates. He previously served as the Twins’ bench coach from 2018 to 2019 under Rocco Baldelli, playing a key role in developing the dynamic lineup that shattered the MLB home run record in 2019.
“This feels like coming home,” Shelton said during his introductory press conference. “The Twins organization has always felt like family to me — from the front office to the clubhouse. I’m thrilled to be back and ready to help bring another championship to Minnesota.”
Twins President of Baseball Operations Derek Falvey called Shelton “the right leader at the right time,” praising his experience in player development and his ability to connect with both veterans and young talent. “He understands our culture, our values, and our vision,” Falvey stated. “He’s been part of this before, and we believe he’s the right person to take us to the next level.”
During his tenure in Pittsburgh, Shelton led the Pirates through a challenging rebuilding period, earning praise for his steady leadership and emphasis on fundamentals. Though the team’s record rarely reflected it, his players consistently spoke about his communication skills and calm presence.
Shelton now inherits a Twins roster still built around stars like Byron Buxton, and Pablo López, but one that’s seeking to regain the momentum of its 2023 playoff run. His familiarity with the organization, and with the data-driven approach that Falvey and GM Thad Levine emphasize, should make for a smooth transition.
Shelton’s return also signals a philosophical shift. Insiders say the Twins wanted a manager who could blend analytics with intuition, someone who values numbers but trusts his eyes and experience, too. Shelton, who has coached in multiple organizations since 2005, fits that mold perfectly.
“I’ve learned a lot since my first stint here,” Shelton said. “I’ve been through the ups and downs of managing. But the goal is always the same — to compete, to grow, and to win for the fans who pack Target Field every summer.”
The Twins are expected to finalize Shelton’s coaching staff in the coming weeks.
