ST. PAUL, Minn. (KFGO) – The Minnesota Department of Public Safety has released details of a week-long extra enforcement campaign late last month that resulted in nearly 1,000 citations for not wearing a seatbelt or failing to properly secure a child.
“The fact that we have 4.8% that still haven’t figured out how to take two seconds and put on their seatbelt, but yet that is still almost a third of our fatalities, that alone should tell you just how effective that seatbelt or that child restraint system is.” Mike Hanson with the State’s office of Traffic Safety said.
The State Patrol and more than 250 law enforcement agencies took part, with funding for overtime enforcement provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The list of agencies that cited the most drivers for failing to buckle up included 92 by St. Paul police. The Patrol issued 77 citations in the Twin Cities west metro and 48-tickets in the Thief River Falls district.
