WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Angie Craig is expressing concerns about the Trump Administration’s proposal to turn the former Prairie Correctional Facility in Appleton into an immigration and customs enforcement detention center.
In a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Craig said she has heard concerns from the Appleton community over the idea of establishing a new ICE detention center on the site of the former private prison.
Craig, a Democrat, says she is committed to conducting a congressional oversight visit if the the administration follows through with the plan. The prison closed in 2010 after 28 years.
Republican State Sen. Torrey Westrom of Alexandria had earlier proposed using the complex to house inmates when the state prison in Stillwater closes.
