MAPLEWOOD, Minn. (Minnesota Reformer) — State Sen. Tou Xiong, DFL-Maplewood, was arrested and booked into Ramsey County Jail at 3:52 a.m. on Aug. 14 on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
This is Xiong’s second arrest while in office. He pleaded guilty to DWI charges in 2022 and was ordered to a year of probation and a $288 fine.
In a statement provided by a DFL spokesperson, Xiong said he was driving home from a family gathering when he was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
“I take full responsibility for my actions, and sincerely apologize to my constituents and the people I’ve let down,” Xiong said. “I want to thank law enforcement for doing their job to keep the roads safe. Today, I have begun the work of talking to my family and to my Senate colleagues about the situation.”
Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher said Xiong was arrested by State Patrol and released pending further investigation.
Xiong is chair of the Senate State and Local Government Committee. He was first elected to the Legislature in 2018.
No charges related to Xiong’s arrest had been filed as of early afternoon Thursday.
