SISSETON, S.D. (KFGO KWAT) – An active shooter situation led to a police standoff in Sisseton in northeastern South Dakota Thursday morning.
Roberts County Sheriff Tyler Appel says a 911 call came in shortly before 9 of someone shooting off rounds in a tribal housing neighborhood on the north side of Sisseton. Deputies and tribal police responded and determined that a man had fired a weapon multiple times. The suspect was armed and barricaded himself in his residence.
After evacuating nearby residents, tribal police officers negotiated using a loudspeaker and the man surrendered about an hour later. Another man was struck once by a bullet that came through a wall. He was checked at the scene and medically cleared.
Appel says the suspect may have been suffering from a mental health crisis. He was taken to the hospital in Sisseton.
The Highway Patrol and Game, Fish and Parks officers assisted on the call.
