She came into the world a ball of sunshine and left with the same amount of spirit.
Cathy Alm (50) was born to David and Carol Alm on September 11, 1974, in Sioux Falls, SD, rounding out the family with Heather and Meredith (Meri).
The family spent a few years in Sioux Falls and then moved to Farmers Branch, Texas, finally moving to Aurora, Colorado where the family would take root. After her father’s death, the family moved to North Dakota where Jon joined the family.
Cathy was a quiet soul in a noisy world, longing for simple joys. She enjoyed crocheting, cross-stitching, baking (oh, her bread and apple pie were a delight!) and reading. Cathy read a variety of genres from classic fiction and religious theory to Russian science fiction (who knew there was such a genre?) and history. She loved her Lord. But her greatest joy was being with her family.
After her mother’s passing in 2019, she and Meri would spend hours driving around talking and listening to K-pop or Mongolian throat music. Just a couple normal gals, right?
Cathy was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in March 2024. A few days later, Heather passed away.
Cathy continued to fight through serious chemotherapy side effects that cost her the ability to walk, but she fought to regain some independence until her cancer became more aggressive in January 2025. Nevertheless, Cathy continued to fight through several more hospital stays, until the doctors shared there was little more they could do.
Through hospice, Cathy came home on June 5th. She longed to be home with family and was so happy to be home. Cathy ended her fight on June 9th with family and friends at her side. As she once said, “Like Scripture says, those who love their lives will surely lose them. I think I’ve been loving this life, but not realizing it, and God is trying to save me from myself. They can do what they like with this world, it’s not my resting place. I have a better home to look forward to.”
Cathy was preceded in death by her parents, her oldest sister, her grandparents, 3 uncles, and 3 aunts. She is survived by her sister, Meri, brother, Jon, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Celebration of Life Service: Friday, June 20, 2025, at 2 PM, at Peace Lutheran Church, Fargo, ND, with visitation one hour before the service.
