ST. PAUL, Minn. – Voters will choose a new representative in a heavily Democratic Minnesota House district at the center of a post-Election Day drama to control the chamber.
A state court disqualified Democratic Rep.-elect Curtis Johnson from taking office for failing to meet residency requirements. This gave House Republicans a temporary 67-66 advantage. Lawmakers eventually reached a power-sharing agreement that assumes Democrats will hold the district in Tuesday’s special election, restoring the previous 67-67 tie.
The nominees for the seat are Democrat David Gottfried and Republican Paul Wikstrom, who challenged Johnson’s residency status in court. House District 40B is in the northern St. Paul suburbs.
