HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (KFGO) – Former Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe was arrested during a city council meeting in southern California Tuesday.
Kluwe was speaking out against a decision to display a plaque featuring the acronym MAGA on the Huntington Beach Library to commemorate its 50th anniversary.
“As the community made clear at the library commission meeting last Tuesday, everyone is in favor of a plaque to celebrate the library, but the vast majority are against including a ‘MAGA’ across it,” Kluwe said. “Unfortunately, it’s clear that this council does not listen, so instead I’m going to take my time to say what ‘MAGA’ has stood for these past three weeks.”
In the design, MAGA stands for Magical, Alluring, Galvanizing, and Adventurous.
Kluwe, a 15-year resident of Huntington Beach, went on to tell the council he believes MAGA stands for erasing trans people, racism, firing federal employees, and defunding education.
“MAGA is profoundly corrupt, unmistakably anti-democracy, and – most importantly – MAGA is explicitly a Nazi movement,” Kluwe said. “It may have replaced a Swastika with a red hat, but that is what it is. I will now engage in the time-honored, American tradition of peaceful civil disobedience.”
Kluwe began to approach council members to a chorus of cheers, while a council member shouted for him to get out.
Police officers tackled Kluwe and took him into custody. He was released several hours later.
