BISMARCK (KCND) – A North Dakota Senate committee will hold a hearing on Monday on a proposal to raise taxes on tobacco products including vaping.
Senate Minority Leader Kathy Hogan of Fargo introduced the measure. She says they don’t start if they can’t afford it. Hogan says North Dakota’s cigarette and vaping costs are so low compared to all those things that the state has seen a “significant increase in use.”
Hogan’s bill raises the tax on a pack of cigarettes by 25 cents, to 69 cents. She says the tax makes a difference, especially among younger people.
Hogan’s bill, SB 2281, is before the Senate Finance and Taxation Committee.
In the House, Republican Representative Vicky Steiner of Dickinson has a bill to raise the tax on cigarettes to $1.09 per pack.
