FARGO (KFGO) – Much of the money has not been secured, but work is underway on a major terminal expansion and parking ramp project at Hector International Airport in Fargo.
With Mayor Fargo Tim Mahoney once critical of the airport authority for not moving fast enough on construction of a parking ramp, work is underway on both the thousand-vehicle ramp and a terminal expansion project at Hector International Airport. Shawn Dobberstein says the disagreement was mostly about whether FAA money would be available for the ramp.
“Not so much friction I think it was just how the financial form of this would work out, especially with the parking ramp itself,” Dobberstein says. “It’s always been on the master plan, it’s been in the masterplan for many years. It’s just been when is the right time to do it financially so that the airport authority can continue to be financially viable. Without the $40 million loan from the Bank of North Dakota we probably wouldn’t be having the groundbreaking for the parking ramp, but certainly the terminal project would be moving forward.”
The thousand-stall parking ramp should be completed next August with the terminal expansion to follow in the early part of 2027. The terminal will go from 5 to nine gates. Dobberstein says he expects the expansion will attract additional airlines.
The total cost of both projects is about $200 million dollars. The airport authority is still looking for $60 million from the state and $80 million from the federal government.
Dignitaries on hand included Governor Doug Burgum, Senators John Hoeven and Kevin Cramer.
