U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced that USDA is investing in domestic fertilizer projects to strengthen competition for U.S. farmers, ranchers and agricultural producers.
The Department is awarding $83 million in 12 states for projects through the Fertilizer Production Expansion Program (FPEP). This program provides grants to independent business owners to help them modernize equipment, adopt new technologies, build production plants and more.
In Minnesota, Sustane Natural Fertilizer Inc. will receive $2,397,792 to enhance and expand the current facility and purchase new equipment to increase fertilizer production. Sustane is a family owned natural fertilizer manufacturer located in Cannon Falls, Minnesota.
In North Dakota, $1,491,859 will be used to assist with the expansion of Ray Farmers Union Elevator Company in Ray, North Dakota. The new addition will increase dry fertilizer capacity by 7,025 tons to a total of 11,425 tons. The project will benefit existing and new customers in the North Dakota counties of Williams, Divide, Mountrail, Burke, and McKenzie as well as improve fertilizer supply logistics.
USDA is making awards to facilities in California, Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon and Washington.
To date, USDA has invested $251 million in 57 projects across 29 states through FPEP.
