ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is warning about unsafe ice conditions due to unusually warm temperatures.
Ice Safety Coordinator Nicole Biagi says the ice on bodies of water in neighborhoods can be especially dangerous with small ponds and drainage ditches melting the fastest.
“Ice may appear to look thick, but that doesn’t mean that it’s strong,” Biagi says. “So, it’s important to really understand ice safety before you consider going out, and if the ice looks cloudy or gray, the best idea is to stay off of it.”
Biagi says now is a critical time to talk with children about the dangers of walking on ice.
Numerous events on the lakes and ponds in Minnesota have been canceled this winter.
