Governor Burgum, candidate for President, is a Republican in a Republican state. A state so dominated by the Republican Party that he shouldn’t have to worry about anything. Everywhere he looks, there’s a fellow Republican he should be able to count on.
The problem is, he can’t.
The North Dakota legislature goofed up the last legislative session, and caused a special session. But they’re not the only ones responsible. The Governor signed the bill that caused all of this. They approved spending and spending measures in a catch-all bill that gave Burgum’s fellow Republicans everything they wanted and more, all without hearings and in many cases, the light of day. So why doesn’t the legislature like him? Why wouldn’t they give him what he wanted?
All he was asking for was an income tax break that the wealthiest North Dakotans would benefit from. People like Burgum himself. People with incomes high enough that they wouldn’t even notice a tax break. So the question North Dakotans, and for that matter, Americans, might ask is, why didn’t the legislature give it to him? Why would a man looking to lead the Nation lose a debate this simple in his own state?
The answer is simple: They don’t like him.
Certainly not enough to give him the win he desperately wanted. A win that he thought would boost a campaign that has never taken off. I’m sure in the Governor’s mind, he was hoping to get on that national debate stage and tell the audience that he was the one who just lowered income tax in his own state. The problem is, he won’t get to do that now. In fact, if any member of the national media was paying attention and felt he was relevant, they might ask him why he couldn’t get it done.
I’m just not sure they’d get the same answer from him as they would get from me.
Good riding with you,
Joel
