WILLISTON, N.D. (KFGO) – Unofficial results indicate the vote by Williston residents in Tuesday’s special election to repeal the long-standing ordinance banning pit bulls will remain in place.
There were 554 ‘yes’ votes and 518 ‘no’ votes. However, the ballot question needed a 50% majority to repeal the ordinance and the ‘yes’ vote was 36 votes short.
Jyl Albertson sought to end the ban and organized a petition drive and collected the required number of signatures to qualify it for the ballot.
During Tuesday’s voting, she said there was some confusion and misunderstandings that should be examined, and she plans to discuss it with her attorney. Albertson also said she will wait to see if there are any changes in the voting when canvassed next week.
Mayor Howard Klug said the vote was close and controversial, but he said the city commission stands by their decision to rather be “safe than sorry.” They also want to make sure there’s education behind the pit bull breed.
