November 25, 1937 – September 20, 2023
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Edwin George Randel, who peacefully departed this world on September 20, 2023, at the age of 85. He has long anticipated joining his beloved wife, Darlene, his infant son, Joseph, and his cherished golden retriever, KC, in heaven. Ed leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and dedication that will forever be cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Born on November 25, 1937, in Jamestown, ND, Ed lived a life rich in experiences and filled with profound meaning. He was the beloved son of Obert and Beatrice (Wenzel) Randel, who instilled in him the values of hard work and integrity that would guide him throughout his lifetime.
The family moved to Fargo in the summer of 1954, and Ed completed his high school career at Shanley High School. He fondly recalled his time at Shanley and remembered best the friends he made and playing football for coach Sid Cichy.
After graduating from Shanley in 1955, Ed embarked on a remarkable journey of service to his country and community. He proudly served in the United States Navy, where he displayed unwavering commitment and honor as a radar operator on a picket ship in the North Atlantic.
Following his military service, Ed followed in his father’s footsteps and dedicated three decades of his life to law enforcement and public service. He began working for the Northern Pacific Railroad Police and later joined the Fargo Police Department, retiring as a sergeant in 1989. Ed also trained as an EMT, working part-time with the F-M Ambulance Service during these years.
Ed believed in education and life-long learning, attending many law enforcement programs around the country. The knowledge and expertise Ed gained were put to use by the city of Fargo, surrounding communities, and across the State of North Dakota. He trained many officers with the Fargo PD, Cass County Sheriff’s Office, and many agencies across the state with his work with the ND Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s training branch. He used his specialized training to disarm several bombs in Fargo and saved many lives throughout his career.
As a dedicated officer, he worked tirelessly to protect and serve his community, earning the respect and admiration of all who crossed his path. His courage and commitment to upholding justice were an inspiration to his colleagues and those he swore to protect.
Outside of his professional life, Ed was a loving husband and father. Ed married Kay Weber on November 25, 1959, with whom he had three children: Scott David Randel of Washington, Christopher Michael Randel of Hawaii, and Kelly Ann Moore of California. Later in life, he found love once more with Darlene Forthun. They married on September 6, 1969, and had two children together: Robert Edwin (Jill) Randel of Mountain Home, AR, and Joseph Francis Randel. His family was his pride and joy, and his legacy lives on through the values he instilled in each of them.
Ed enjoyed hunting, fishing, and dogs, sharing his passions and wisdom with those around him. He spent many years after his retirement training dogs at the F-M Dog Obedience School with Darlene. Together, Ed and his Golden Retriever “K.C.” visited pediatric and cancer patients in hospitals and nursing homes, bringing entertainment, joy, and love to those in need.
Ed will be remembered for his unwavering dedication, strong sense of duty, and boundless love for his family. He touched the lives of many and left an indelible mark on the hearts of all who knew him.
He is survived by his children, Scott, Christopher, Kelly, and Robert; three grandchildren, Shannon (Byron) Saravia, Rebecca Gonzales, and Sean Randel; and four great-grandchildren, Maverick Saravia, Shiloh Saravia, Emmalee Randel, and William Randel. He was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene; son, Joseph; parents; and sister, Heather (John) Peterson of Las Vegas, NV.
Ed’s memory will forever be cherished by his family and friends. In accordance with his wishes, there will be a private burial service held for immediate family members.
As we say our final goodbyes, let us remember the remarkable life Ed lived and the enduring impact he had on the world. May he rest in eternal peace.
