Mitt Romney announced this week that he is not running for re-election to the United States Senate from Utah in 2024. He cited that, should he win, he’d be in his 80’s in the next term, and it is time for a new generation of leaders.
He’s right and everyone knows it. As I have been saying on “News and Views,” 80 is too old to serve in office. I believe this for many reasons, not the least of which is that the country deserves someone that can do the job well, and do it with the kind of energy and vigor this nation is worthy of.
Clearly, Romney’s message was aimed at both Joe Biden and Donald Trump. These are two men that will be in their 80’s in the next term as President. Two men that will not take the honorable path like Romney just did.
There’s still a role for Mitt Romney in his public service to this nation. He needs to be the person that pulls back the curtain and tells the truth about the far-right in the GOP. He needs to name names of the people that fear Donald Trump so much that they are willing to let him tear apart our democracy.
In other words, he just needs to share the truth.
History won’t be kind to Donald Trump. He and his family have done everything they can to tear us apart, while not caring one bit about what is destroyed while they profit.
History will be kind to Mitt Romney though. The dignified manner that he has served has been a model for generations to come. His passion for his country and the oath he took to defend it shows during times like this.
There’s a chapter still left to write; a chapter on how he saves the GOP. It’s a chapter that just needs to be true. If it’s written, it not only will save the party of his father, but it may just save the United States as a whole.
Good riding with you,
Joel
