DULUTH, Minn. – Superior National Forest officials are reporting a recent increase in bear interactions with campers in parts of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northern Minnesota.
Public affairs officer Joy Vandrie said the spike in bear encounters is linked to improper food storage.
“The less we can entice the animals to come after our human food – the better it is for us and for the animals,” Vandrie said.
Vandrie said food should be stored in a “bear-resistant” container and garbage hung high in the trees.
Bears have been visiting six lakes in the Gunflint Trail area and one near Cook, although there have been no reports of physical encounters or injuries.
