BISMARCK, N.D. (KFGO/PRAIRIE PUBLIC) – North Dakota is the eighth most affordable state for college students, according to a study by Forbes Advisor.
Veronica Freeman, managing editor of education at Forbes Advisor, said they looked at a couple different factors for the study.
“We were looking at the average rent cost, the affordable tuition rate, and then we looked at other costs – such as college costs, the living wage needed in each state, the unemployment rate, and the percentage change over the course of a year for college tuition,” Freeman said.
Freeman said North Dakota ranks ‘below average’ for college cost, living wage, unemployment rate, rent costs, and comparatively affordable tuition rates. She said the only thing the state doesn’t rank low on is the percentage change category.
“The national average percentage change for total cost from 2019 to 2021 was 1.78, and North Dakota had a 3.48 percentage increase,” Freeman said.
Forbes Advisor ranked South Dakota as the most affordable state for college, followed by Montana.
