MOORHEAD (KFGO) – Moorhead Area Schools Superintendent Brandon Lunak says it’s disappointing that Moorhead police pulled their resource officers from schools because of a new state law that police across the state say is unclear on how officers are able to control fights and other disturbances.
Lunak said he’s been in contact with state leaders, and they’re telling him progress is being made, and he’s hopeful a resolution can be reached to get the officers back soon.
“I’m hopeful something can get done,” Lunak said. “I believe that there are no bad players. If we can just find an amicable solution, we can get our folks back to where they belong, where they want to be, and to where they need to be.”
Lunak said school leaders want the SROs back in the school, as do students. A survey shows that 90% of the student body value the officers and want them in the building. He said the program is bigger than just the role the officers play as SROs, it’s about relationships.
“Everything they do outside of that – from providing bicycles for kids in need, providing opportunities where they can go to ‘shop with a cop.’ They do so many things that, to the general public, kind of goes unnoticed,” Lunak said.
