It came to Fargo just as most of us thought it would. And the price of this senseless killing was paid for by Officers Andrew Dotas and Tyler Hawes, as well as citizen Karlee Koswick, who will endure the physical and emotional injuries for the rest of their lives. And the last who paid the ultimate price with his own life, was Officer Jake Wallin.
I truly think the murderer that did this hideous act would want his name said in here, but that’s not going to happen. He got exactly what he deserved, which is a one-way ticket to hell.
When reports came out with the rounds of ammunition and guns he had, it was nothing short of bone-chilling. For a deranged man like that to have that much power and explosives heading to the Downtown Fargo Street Fair has to at least make you think for a minute. Think about those hurt, the people closest to them, and those that could have been added to the list of those we lost.
It also should force us to think about what we can do. Not about those mass killings that we can’t control, but instead about those that might have been, but we’ll never know about. Or at the very least, think about how to minimize the damage that evil can do.
How many of you knew what a binary trigger was before this shooting? I didn’t, and I know guns. I never knew there was a trigger that allowed a weapon to fire when pulled and released. Now you tell me how law enforcement is going to take that on and survive it. I don’t think they will survive it in the long run. You know it, and I know it.
It’s time for someone to step up and lead the way to making them illegal. As Attorney General Drew Wrigley pointed out, they have no purpose other than what it was used for on July 14th. They shoot and kill people at such a speed that even those armed and trained don’t have a chance.
As I said, this carnage came to Fargo. It came to our front door. That means we no longer can sit back and pretend it isn’t our problem to solve. Now is the time when we need our strong leaders to step up and act. Leaders with the courage to defend the innocent and take on those that aren’t. They have to be willing to take on the radical minority that controls them with an iron fist. And they have to be willing to take on the NRA.
So Doug Burgum, John Hoeven, Kevin Cramer, and Kelly Armstrong: you need to have the courage to act on behalf of your constituents. At the very least, you need to make that binary trigger illegal. Thoughts and prayers simply aren’t enough.
You owe it to the people you represent. And you owe it to Officer Jake Wallin.
Good riding with you,
Joel
